Neck Asymmetry in Babies
Some babies seem to prefer holding their head to one side following birth or during the first few weeks of life. This may right itself but can contribute to feeding problems (latching on is typically problematic on one side), swallowing, regurgitation and, if untreated, may lead to asymmtries, and possible long term neck development issues. These babies are often unsettled and may be in discomfort.
The birth process involves a lot of force particularly through the top of the neck. The joints of the neck are well adapted to this being very flexible, but may become so strained that following birth, the baby cannot move its head equally in both directions. This can irritate nerves emerging from the base of the skull and have far reaching problems throughout the body.
There is also a condition known as Congenital Torticollis resulting in neck asymmetries - this requires appropriate medical management.

Your Osteopath will perform a careful examination of the muscles & joints of the neck and skull looking for compressed/strained areas. Gentle techniques will re-balance these structures following which the parents can encourage head movements as below.

Tips for Parents:
1. Where neck rotation is restricted on one side, encourage movement by placing attention-getting objects/light/yourself etc. on the unpopular side, or by having the baby visually following a toy.

2. When your baby is lying flat put a small towel under the cheek on the side to which head is habitually turned (take care not to go too close to nose or mouth). This will prevent movement to this side.

3. Plenty of tummy time play - this stimulates the muscles at the back of the neck and helps good postural development. Carrying your baby facing forward also promotes symmetrical head & neck movements through natural curiosity.

4. If bottle feeding, make sure you always feed your baby on both sides - this makes the baby rotate their head both ways.

5.Some gentle massage at the back of the neck is always helpful. When your baby is relaxed or asleep try gently putting the head to the unpopular side.
