Breathing Difficulties & Heartburn in Pregnancy
As pregnancy progresses, and the baby approaches the chest cavity, increasing pressure is placed on the spine, lower ribs and respiratory diaphragm. The lungs
have less space in which to function as the abdominal cavity enlarges. This can lead to breathing difficulties and heartburn. The rib cage itself needs to enlarge considerably during pregnancy, and any stiffness in this area will make the problem worse.
Your Osteopath will stretch and mobilise your ribs and
mid-back to allow as much 'breathing space' as possible, to encourage full use of available lung capacity. Gentle techniques to both sternum (breastbone) and diaphragm aim to help with heartburn.
