| Mid Back & Rib Pain As pregnancy progresses, there is increasing stress placed on the mid & upper back and the rib cage. The upper back commonly becomes more curved due to increase in size & weight of the breasts and baby (yellow in the pic). The ribs themselves have to expand about 4cms as the growing baby moves upwards, and the breast bone (sternum) changes its angle. All these changes can result in aches, pains, discomfort and breathing difficulties. An Osteopath would stretch, mobilise or manipulate all the above areas, so that the expectant mother was more able to adjust to the growing baby. The Osteopath may also give specific exercise and postural advice. After birth, mid-back pain is also common due to the demands of breast feeding, which often means sitting for long periods of time in less than perfect positions. Osteopathy often gives much relief and support during this period. |
